Americans are giving less these days, but not by much.
According to the Giving USA Foundation's annual report, Americans gave an estimated $499.33 billion to charity in 2022, a decline of 3.4% in current dollars from a revised total of $516.65 billion in 2021, the Detroit Free Press reports.
After adjusting for inflation, the total dropped to $516.65 billion in 2022.
"But despite uncertain economic times, Americans demonstrated how essential they view the nonprofit sector and its ability to solve big problemsby still giving nearly half a trillion dollars in 2022," the dean of the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis tells the Free Press.
Giving to foundations rose by 10.1%, to $56.84 billion, in 2022, while giving to international affairs fell by 2.7%, according to the Giving USA report.
